http://www.python.org/doc/2.4.3/lib/node115.html says that repl in sub(pattern, repl, string[, count]) can be a function.   This is fact does not work and this facility came in a later version.

Um, what?  This has worked since at least 1.5.2, and probably before.  Did you think you'd found the docs for 1.4?
