Simply due to configure not beeing up to date, running
autoconf solves this. Please run autoconf when making a
distribution.

Oops, you're right.  Fixed in revision 1.279.6.4 of configure.

(usually the practice is to run autoconf whenever a change
is made to configure.in.  it looks like I forgot to do that
this time).

Does everything more-or-less work when you run autoconf?

Yes, it does, but I have some other issues that stem from
setup.py, I'm not sure (haven't looked) if it uses the info
configure figured out, But I suppose those should be filed
as another bug (and I have to do a little bit of research
into it), but I've got a mostly working installation now :)
