could you please link to "index.html" from modindex.html instead 
of just "./"?

other candidates are about.html and 
acks.html

this makes local-copy navigation better. if one has 
modindex bookmarked, the uparrow gives a filelisting instead of 
the document index :-(

What version of the documentation are you using?  The
current version seems to get this right already, but I might
be missing an instance that doesn't.

Python 2.2, Win32 HTML files shiped with the installer.

and it is 
indeed fixed in the "in-development" version (CSS) for the modindex, but 
there is a "./" left in about.html.

Ok, fixed in Doc/html/about.html revisions 1.5, 1.3.24.1,
and 1.3.6.1.
